The Role of NGOs during COVID-19: A session by Dhanushkodi Sivanandhan

 

SP Jain School of Global Management hosted a guest session with Dhanushkodi Sivanandhan, Maharashtra’s former Director General of Police and founder of an NGO, on the role of NGOs during the COVID-19 pandemic. The session was organised for the Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) students of the Mumbai cohort on April 6, 2021. It was facilitated by Professor Shrinivas Shikaripurkar (Adjunct Faculty at SP Jain) as part of his subject ‘Sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility’.

SP Jain School of Global Management hosted a guest session with Dhanushkodi Sivanandhan, Maharashtra’s former Director General of Police and founder of an NGO, on the role of NGOs during the COVID-19 pandemic. The session was organised for the Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) students of the Mumbai cohort on April 6, 2021. It was facilitated by Professor Shrinivas Shikaripurkar (Adjunct Faculty at SP Jain) as part of his subject ‘Sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility’.

During the session, Mr Sivanandhan highlighted how NGOs can remain committed to social responsibility amid the COVID-19 pandemic. He spoke about the different sectors wherein NGOs can extend their assistance and aid.

Mr Sivanandhan, who runs the NGO Roti Bank to provide nourishment to the impoverished, continued the session by sharing insights on the various activities undertaken by Roti Bank during the COVID-19 crisis for many vulnerable communities including migrant workers. He emphasised the importance of NGOs in a developing country like India, where a major section of the population is grappling with issues such as unemployment, poverty and hunger.

As the session progressed, Mr Sivanandhan also:

  • Answered all the questions put forth by students on diverse topics such as corruption, nepotism and politics
  • Shared his valuable experiences to help students become socially responsible citizens
  • Explained the measures he has undertaken to support the police community and their families
  • Shared his story of finding his Ikigai (a Japanese concept of finding a purpose in life which provides a sense of fulfilment) by feeding the needy

The session concluded with BBA student Megan Pawar thanking Mr Sivanandhan on behalf of the cohort. His initiatives inspired the students, and his experiences and advice made the session a memorable one.
